Lancaster General Hospital Ranked Nationally by U.S. News & World Report

Hospital earns national honors in two specialties: Diabetes & Endocrinology and Orthopedics
Ranked 4th in Pennsylvania

Lancaster, Pa. – July 26, 2022 -- Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) earned national and statewide recognition from U.S. News & World Report and its Best Hospitals rankings for 2022-23. This is the 2nd consecutive year that LGH has received a state ranking of 4th in Pennsylvania, the highest state ranking that LGH has ever received from U.S. News & World Report.

The hospital, which is part of University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine), is nationally ranked in two medical specialties of Diabetes & Endocrinology and Orthopedics, ranked fourth among Pennsylvania hospitals, and ranked first in Lancaster County. Additionally, LGH earned “high performing” rankings in 21 medical specialties and common procedures and conditions.

In addition, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is ranked 13th in the nation, and ranked as the top hospital in Pennsylvania.

“This national recognition once again affirms the dedication of our exceptional LG Health staff, and our deep commitment to fulfilling our Mission to advance the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said John J. Herman, CEO of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “Of the more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide evaluated, only 164 hospitals earned a national ranking in at least one specialty, making our honors in two specialties even more significant.”

LGH ranked among the nation’s top-ranked hospitals in the specialties of Orthopedics (30th tie) and Diabetes & Endocrinology (46th). In addition to the national rankings in Orthopedics and Diabetes & Endocrinology, LGH earned national, “high performing” rankings in five specialties: Cardiology, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Urology, and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery.

LGH also rated as “high performing” in 16 Common Adult Procedures and Conditions, including, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip fracture, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery, maternity care, uterine cancer surgery, and stroke.

The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings recognize hospitals that excel in treating patients.  The report strives to identify hospitals that provide high-quality care for complicated illnesses and for common care. It bases the rankings on factors including patient outcomes, nurse staffing levels and surveys of physicians.

Other Penn Medicine hospitals earned top honors in the rankings. The national ranking for the combined enterprise of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center earned it a spot on the magazine’s “Honor Roll” for the 16th consecutive year. Pennsylvania Hospital was ranked 12th and Chester County Hospital was ranked 17th in the state of Pennsylvania. Princeton Health ranks 6th in the state of New Jersey.
