YORK, PA (MAY 3, 2023) – Four WellSpan Health hospitals have received “A” safety grades for spring 2023 from The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers widely acknowledged as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.
WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, and WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital all received the “A” safety grades.
“The safety of our patients is always the top priority of every single member of the WellSpan Health team, and these safety grades are proof of that,” said Dr. Michael Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer at WellSpan Health. “I am proud of the work our hospital staff, leaders, and health care providers put in each day to ensure that when a patient walks into a WellSpan Health facility, they will receive quality care in a safe environment.”
The safety grades are issued twice a year. All four of the hospitals that received A’s for the spring grading period also earned A’s during the last grading period in Fall 2022.
The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over thirty national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.
“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But these four WellSpan Health hospitals received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety
Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital
prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is
peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated
twice annually, in the fall and spring.
Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 22 national patient safety measures to assign grades to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals across the country, twice per year. WellSpan Health’s full grade details can be viewed here.
WellSpan’s remaining eligible acute care hospitals, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and WellSpan York Hospital, earned a “B” grade for spring 2023.
