NORWAY SPRUCE TREES ONCE LINED THE STREETS OF NEWMANSTOWN

Townspeople tell the story of the Long family who owned much of the land in Newmanstown. The Long brothers, Samuel and Isaac, were both married and quite wealthy. One had a wife with asthma and it was believed that Norway Spruce trees could purify the air.
Norway Spruce trees planted by the Long family in the late 1800s and into the early 1900s lined the streets of Newmanstown. Although some remain scattered throughout the little town, time and weather have taken their toll on many of these beautiful trees.
After losing many of the trees along their property, Helen and Elvin Hurst, Kountry Kraft Inc.’s co-founders, began replacing the fallen Norway Spruce trees. This year in honor of Arbor Day, Kountry Kraft’s second and third generation will plant a Norway Spruce tree along Sheridan Road. The young tree will proudly stand in the row where others have stood and will face the monument erected by Isaac Long in honor of his only son, Dr. Horace Long, who is buried in Newmanstown Memorial Cemetery.
