Lebanon VA Medical Center’s interim chief of staff was included in the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine’s 2018 class of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Visionaries.
Dr. Scott Shreve was one of 30 individuals recognized for his impactful contributions to his field. Nearly 150 individuals were nominated and more than 6,500 votes were cast.
“Many common themes emerged in praise of the nominees - mentor, leader, big thinker,” the AAHPM said in a statement announcing the awardees. “They were cited for their innovation, meaningful contributions, extraordinary vision and inspirational leadership. Among the 30 were early pioneers and trailblazers, as well as young innovators representing the new generation of Visionaries taking the profession into the future.”
Dr. Shreve served as the National Director of the Hospice and Palliative Care Program for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He has led the implementation and oversight of the Comprehensive End-of-Life Care Initiative to change the culture of care for Veterans with serious illness and to ensure reliable access to quality palliative care. Dr. Shreve is also at the frontlines of care, leading the 17-bed inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care Unit at the Lebanon VAMC. He also serves as a clinical associate professor in Penn State’s College of Medicine.
During his acceptance speech, Shreve cited his first hospice nurse manager, Barb Kohr, as his model for learning “how to care for and deeply love the Veterans and their families we were honored to have” at the medical center. “Who could be more deserving than Veterans to get quality palliative and hospice care?”
