We are looking for an experienced full-time Government Relations Coordinator who will be responsible for advancing Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s (CPFB) public policy and advocacy goals. With guidance from the Senior Policy Research Manager, Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania, this role will require the Coordinator to execute government relations strategy in furtherance of the public policy goals of the network. The position will also be expected to work collaboratively with the internal Policy Research team to identify opportunities where research, neighbors, or partner agencies can support, and influence, public policy outcomes.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local, state and federal legislators and their staff to position the CPFB as a respected non-partisan advocate against hunger and a trusted voice for policies that address the root causes of food insecurity.
  • Serve as liaison between CPFB, Feeding America, and Feeding Pennsylvania on government relations priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania to develop and execute state and federal government relations initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for CPFB to influence the public policy process by direct engagement with local, state, and federal elected and appointed officials including legislative meetings, site visits, and roundtables.
  • Identify opportunities for CPFB to influence the public policy process through other avenues including media, coalitions, and grassroots advocacy.
  • Work with the Policy Research team to identify opportunities where research and data can support the public policy goals of the Food Bank, including creating legislative profiles of state and federal elected officials.
  • Cultivate a strong grassroots advocacy network of agency partners, neighbors, and other community partners.
  • Prepare data, talking points, and leave behinds as needed for engagement with elected officials.
  • Attend Feeding America’s monthly Government Relations webinar and Feeding Pennsylvania’s weekly Government Relations meeting. 
  • Participate in Feeding America D.C. Fly-in Days and state lobby days in Harrisburg.
  • Develop a strong understanding of state and federal anti-hunger public policy.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the five "Pillars of Advocacy": Elected officials, grassroots, grasstops, coalitions, and media.
  • Maintain strong communication between key stakeholders including the Chief Executive Officer, SVP/Chief Equity Officer, Advocacy Committee Chair, Senior Policy Research Manager, and other CPFB leadership as needed.
  • Working with the Senior Policy Research Manager, Executive Assistant, and Advocacy Committee Chair, to help facilitate quarterly Advocacy Committee meetings.
  • Participate in internal committees and workgroups as required.
  • Occasionally assist with Food Bank events.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    • In instances of a federal, state or locally declared emergency, CPFB is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.

    Requirements

    Education and Experience:

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, public administration, non-profit management, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. 

    Experience:

    • One or two years of experience desired but not required. This is an entry-level position.
    • Previous work experience in a non-profit business environment preferred.

  • Strong understanding of and familiarity with issues of poverty and food insecurity.
  • Passion for customer service excellence (internal and external), professional etiquette, personal boundaries, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be friendly, outgoing, positive attitude, and comfortable speaking to people.
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and an outstanding ability to motivate individuals from different cultures, mindsets, and areas of expertise.
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to always abide by the CPFB’s values and appropriate business ethics. 
  • Exhibit strong verbal, written, analytical, public speaking and presentation, planning, time management, and organizational skills. Ability to write, edit, and proofread correspondence and presentation materials for accuracy and style.
  • Must be detail-oriented with the ability to plan, prioritize, take initiative, resolve problems, meet deadlines and multi-task.

  • Advocacy experience at the local, state or federal level (preferably all three).
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to manage information from a number of different sources, draw conclusions, and formulate strategy.
  • Must demonstrate self-confidence, authority and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as needed.
  • Ability to travel effectively for required meetings and events.
  • Knowledge of the organization’s computer software and systems, including being proficient in Microsoft Office Suite programs, department-specific software systems, telecommunications, and internet applications. 
  • Ability to attend departmental and all-staff meetings as directed, staying informed of ongoing changes in department and overall organization.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

     

    Physical Requirements or Licenses:

    • This position has the ability to work remote, in-office or hybrid at the discretion of the SVP/Chief Equity Officer or based on the needs of the organization.
    • Required to register as a lobbyist with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
    • A valid driver’s license with history of a good driving record and auto insurance required. 
    • Ability to travel that may include consecutive overnight stays, and traveling by car, bus, and airplane.
    • Must be able to occasionally lift or move up to 15 pounds.
    • Conditions may include working outside in inclement weather, working closely with others, working alone, and working protracted or irregular hours.
    • The work environment is typically quiet.
