The Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce presented their Century Farm Award to the Gem-Rock Farm this past Tuesday during their Breakfast at the Fair event. The annual Breakfast at the Fair event is organized by the chamber’s Farm-City Committee.

The Gem-Rock Farm started over 100 years ago, on March 29, 1923, when Elmer and Edith Dutweiler purchased the farm. It was then passed on to their daughter Verna, and her husband Harold Sellers when they sold to them on October 7, 1958. The farm was kept in the Seller Family, being handed down 2 more generations to Ken and Karen Sellers, sold to them on January 19, 1970, and then to their son Kraig and wife, Meranda Sellers on January 6, 2012, who currently still own and reside on the farm.

They currently milk 60 cows and raise youngstock for their dairy operation. If farm life wasn’t busy enough, they also have 6 wonderful children. Their daughter, Ainsley, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the chamber’s Farm-City committee this past spring. She will be attending Penn State University for Animal Science.

The Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce Century Farm Award recognizes at least one hundred years of consecutive ownership of a farm by the same family.

The Farm-City Committee will be hosting its annual Chicken BBQ Fundraiser on August 16 at the chamber office. Net proceeds benefit the annual Farm-City scholarship awarded to students continuing education in the agriculture field. For more information visit the event listing.
