Dr. George E. Fava and Dr. Mark C. Maria of Fava & Maria Eye Associates, Lebanon, have assisted seniors in financial need in receiving sight-saving care as volunteers with EyeCare America. Thanks to the efforts of Fava and Maria and volunteer ophthalmologists from across the country, the program recently earned a Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama.

 

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank was selected as a finalist for the Central Penn Business Journal's 2016 Nonprofit Innovation Awards in the "Brand Identity/Unique Marketing Campaign" category. The American Red Cross of Central PA was a finalist in the "Collaboration" category. John W. Lloyd of MANTEC was selected as a finalist in the "Nonprofit Leadership Excellence Category." The winners and runner-ups of the Nonprofit Innovation Awards will be announced on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Wyndham Garden York. (Source: CPBJ.com)

 

Cornwall Manor recently completed its new, $18 million skilled nursing facility. The facility was designed by Beers & Hoffman Ltd. and Arthur Funk & Sons Inc. was the general contractor. On Dec. 30, the Central Penn Business Journal reported that F.N.B., the holding company for First National Bank of Pennsylvania which is acquiring Metro Bancorp Inc., planned on cutting approximately 40 percent of Metro's expenses. As a result 230 employees would be laid off effective Feb. 13, representing 29 percent of Metro's employees. (Source: CPBJ.com) A follow-up article in the Central Penn Business Journal on Jan. 15 stated that F.N.B has decided against closing any Metro branches when it officially acquires the holding company on Feb. 12. Giant Food Stores made a deal with C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. to acquire the 51,800-square-foot Nell's Shurfine supermarket in South Middleton Township. The acquisition is expected to be complete by early March 2016. (Source: CPBJ.com)

Capital BlueCross announced on Jan. 6 that it will partner with The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organziation which focuses on health care quality and safety, to "establish a regional hospital recognition program in Central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley." Working with this organization will help Capital BlueCross to measure and review hospital quality and to better aid patients. (Source: CPBJ.com)

 

The Lebanon County Commission for Women's Eighth Annual Glass Slipper Project is currently seeking gently-used dresses for its prom dress collection. Dresses will be collected on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a the Lebanon Valley Mall (in the old Fashion Bug store). Dresses can also be dropped off at the following locations during normal business hours from February 15-19: Lebanon Family Health Services, TempForce, The Annex, Prudential Gacono Real Estate, Jonestown Bank in Jonestown, and the Wengers of Myerstown construction building. Dresses must be cleaned and on hangers. The dresses will then be sold on Friday, Feb. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lebanon Valley Mall. All dresses will be sold for $10 to Lebanon County young women or relatives of Lebanon County residents. Free alterations will be available. Capital BlueCross' heatlh care analytics and technology solutions subsidary, Geneia LLC, is going to be the lead tenant of the Capitol View Commerce Center located in Harrisburg, occupying the top two floors of the building and bringing nearly 100 jobs to the area. World Trade Center Harrisburg will also rent office space in the building. (Source: CPBJ.com)  

 

Lebanon Valley College's chemistry department recently received the 2016 Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Lancaster General Health has proposed a health care center at McCaskey High School for the 2016-2017 school year. The two-year pilot program proposed by Lancaster General Health would allow them to work out a billing system which it could utilize at other clinics. If the proposal is approved, the health center at McCaskey would be open for three days a week during the school year, and one day a week in the summer. Services would come with a fee, and would include those provided by a typical family doctor. Only patients of Lancaster General's downtown family medicine practice would be able to use these services. (Source: Lancasteronline.com)

 

The United Way of Lebanon County held their 15/16 Campaign Celebration on Thursday, Jan. 28, at StoneRidge Retirement Living in Myerstown. The sponsors for the event included WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, Philhaven, G.F. Bowman, and Lesher Mack Sales & Services.

Last month, UGI Utilities stated that it would be lowering its purchased gas rates. However, the week of Jan. 18, the company announced that it filed a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to "increase its base rates for residential, commercial and industrial comsumers." The increase in rates is needed, according to UGI, to maintain system operations and improvements. The rate increase would effect the delivery charge component of customers' bills. UGI has requested that the new rates be effective March 19, 2016. The cost increase would be 7.4 percent for commercial customers, and 3.2 percent for industrial customers. (Source: CPBJ.com)

 

Switzerland-based TE Connectivity Ltd., which has approximately 2,000 employees in Central Pennsylvania, will sell its Circuit Protection Devices business within the next two months. Littelfuse Inc. based in Chicago will purchase the business for $350 million. A representative from TE Connectivity stated that there will be no jobs lost from the sale. (Source: CPBJ.com)

On Thursday, Jan. 21, Lebanon Valley College hosted a "Symposium on Inclusive Excellence." Dr. Rachel Levine, the physician general for Pennsylvania, gave the keynote address. Lebanon Valley College's Center for Municipal and Corporate Sustainability has received a $50,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to help them identify and reduce water pollution in the county, specifically focusing on MS4 issues. First National Bank of Pennsylvania, the company acquiring Metro Bancorp Inc., has announced several technology upgrades it plans to implement throughout the year. These upgrades include new Intelligent Teller Machines at 16 of its locations in Central Pennsylvania, drive-up smart ATMs, digital in-branch kiosks, and a commercial banking app, among other mobile upgrades. (Source: CPBJ.com)

 

Northwest Bancshares Inc., the holding company for Northwest Savings Bank, announced the week of Jan. 25 that it plans on closing 26 branches by mid-2016. The list of branches being  closed has not yet been made public. A spokesman for Northwest commented that a number of their customers are utilizing online and mobile banking more and more, causing a decrease in branch transactions. (Source: CPBJ.com)

The opening of Bell & Evans' new chicken hatchery, which was originally scheduled to open this spring, has been pushed back. Construction for the hatchery will begin in the spring and will be expected to open by the end of the year. Bell & Evans also announced that it will work with two companies, both based in the Netherlands, to supply technology to help make the hatchery humane. These two companies are HatchTech and Viscon.
