Big Brothers Big Sisters Of The Capital Region Is Taking Downtown Harrisburg "Over the Edge"
HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region launches a new event today in the heart of downtown Harrisburg called “Over the Edge.” Beginning at 9:00 a.m., participants who have raised funds will have the opportunity to rappel down the 8-story, 220-foot Market Square Plaza Building on Second Street uring the all-day spectacle. This exciting event was designed to raisewareness of, and funds for, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ important mentoring initiatives.
Known for traditional site- and community-based mentoring initiatives that are it’s hallmark, Big Brothers Big Sisters is providing new avenues for adults to provide one-to-one mentoring to a child facing adversity.“Over the Edge” draws attention to programs such as “Beyond School Walls,” where children receive hands-on interaction with different career opportunities, and “Bigs in Blue,” a program in which police officers become mentors for children in the communities they protect and serve.
“’Over the Edge’ is an event that takes courage, bravery and commitment: qualities that law enforcement exhibit every day... Thisevent helps support those officers as they take a lead in this program, says Amy Rote, Vice President of Programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region. “The goal of ‘Bigs in Blue’ is to foster friendships that model those same qualities so that today’s youth has the support and courage to overcome day-to-day challenges.”
During the lunch hour, the crowd will enjoy several special guest speakers. Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse and Commissioner George
Hartwick III will discuss what the event means for the Harrisburg community, as well as the importance of mentoring initiatives throughout Dauphin and the surrounding counties. Commissioner Hartwick will also suit up in rapelling gear for “VIP Rappelling,” along with Corporal Joshua Hammer of the Harrisburg Police and Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline. Commissioner Hartwick’s address, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region will officially “kick off” a new “Bigs in Blue” Partnership - with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). Corporal Adam Reed plans to address the crowd on behalf of the PSP. “The Pennsylvania State Police is proud to be the first state police organization in the United States to partner with the Bigs in Blueprogram,” said Corporal Reed. Our troopers are excited for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in Pennsylvania.”
