PA Cares Training Summit 2019

THIS ONE-DAY TRAINING EVENT will focus on considerations that are needed to promote wellness within the lives of service members, veterans, and their families. Selected topics include: military culture, veterans wellness, veterans program funding and benefits, evidence-based and best practices of treatment resources available for the SM/veterans population reviewed through an interactive panel dialogue, veteran drug and alcohol treatment(s), and post traumatic growth. The audience will have opportunities to engage presenters throughout the day.

POST-TRAUMATIC GROWTH

Presenter: Kortney Clemons, US Army Ret.

A look into the military life and reintegration of Kortney Clemons — Purple Heart recipient, U.S. Paralympic national champion, and author. Clemons will speak candidly of his transition, growth through adversity, and ongoing work with fellow veterans.

DRUG & ALCOHOL TREATMENT BEST PRACTICES FOR VETERANS

Presenter: Melissa Callahan, CRNP, DON

This presentation will cover substance use and abuse and comorbidities among service members and veterans. Planned content will cover the different categories of injuries sustained by veterans and the substances used and self-medicating methodology for using them. Subject matter will also cover prominent diagnoses of veterans returning from combat zones, as well as treatment best practices and current provider collaborations assisting in supporting this population’s recovery.

VETERANS TRUST FUND AND BENEFITS REVIEW: PA DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY AND VETERANS AFFAIRS

Presenters: Chip Gilliland, Outreach Specialist; Brian Natali, Chief, Division of Veterans Services & Programs.

A review of the available funding resource and application process of the Pennsylvania Veterans Trust Fund, as well as examples of recipients and their supports for SM/Veterans provided through these funds.

Also reviewed will be the various programs offered by PA DMVA, other state and local agencies, federal benefits, and eligibility requirements. Advocacy and common barriers to services will also be addressed.

UNDERSTANDING MILITARY CULTURE: BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

Presenter: Michael Volz, MA HS, Harrisburg Vet Center

Participants will examine how military culture differs from civilian culture in Pennsylvania. Increasing knowledge about military culture and the individual differences of active duty, active Guard/Reserve, military technician, active duty-operational support, and traditional soldiers/airman will promote ability to relate to and support our service members and veterans. Gaining military culture awareness will enhance relationships needed to provide services across Pennsylvania communities.

Panel members will address established questions related to evidence-based and best practices effective in treating traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and other behavioral/mental health challenges faced by service members and veterans. In addition, the audience is encouraged to interact with panel members to gain understanding, knowledge, and available resources related to the services they provide to this population.

2. Click the search icon button. You will be taken to the course search results page.

4. From the Course Details page, select the registration tab and follow the instructions to register for this course.
